Susquehanna University Student-Athlete Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) Guide

As a student-athlete at Susquehanna University, you have the opportunity to benefit financially from your Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) — your right to profit from your personal brand through endorsements, appearances, autographs, social media and more.  This guide will help you navigate the process, understand your rights and stay compliant with NCAA, conference and university policies while maintaining your student-athlete status.

Opportunities for Student-Athletes

Student-athletes have a variety of opportunities to benefit from their name, image and likeness through activities such as endorsements, appearances and merchandise sales.
  • Social Media Endorsements: Promote brands, products, or services on platforms like Instagram, TikTok or X.
  • Sponsored Content: Collaborate with companies to create content or advertisements.
  • Autograph Signings: Earn money by signing memorabilia or hosting events.
  • Personal Appearances: Get paid for appearances at events, camps, or local businesses.
  • Merchandise Sales: Sell merchandise featuring your name, image, or likeness. It cannot be university-issued property (e.g., uniforms, gear, equipment).

Student-athletes can take advantage of networking opportunities by building relationships with local businesses, alumni and sponsors who may be interested in in forming NIL partnerships.

You may hire an agent or attorney to help negotiate and manage NIL deals, provided they are properly certified and familiar with NCAA, Pennsylvania law and university rules.

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

  • Unfavorable Contracts: Read all contracts carefully and seek legal advice before signing. Avoid agreements that demand excessive exclusivity or long-term commitments.
  • Conflicts of Interest: Avoid NIL deals with companies or brands that conflict with university sponsors or your personal values.
