Box Score 4 Facing some of the toughest competition it will see all season, the Susquehanna University Volleyball team came away with a 2-2 record on the first weekend of the 2018 season with a pair of 3-0 wins Saturday after falling in two five-set matches Friday at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Virginia.
The River Hawks (2-2) fell by 3-2 scores to host Christopher Newport and Muhlenberg Friday before rebounding to defeat Keystone College and Mary Washington University by 3-0 scores Saturday. On Friday, Christopher Newport won the opening set 25-20 before the River Hawks rebounded to win the next two sets 25-19 and 25-19. The fourth set went to the Captains by a 25-17 score and then Christopher Newport wrapped up the match with a 15-8 win in the fifth set.
Against Muhlenberg, the Mules took the opening set 26-24 but the River Hawks rebounded again for sets two and three 25-21 and 25-22. Muhlenberg won the fourth 25-22 and then took the tie-breaker15-13.
On Saturday, Susquehanna beat Keystone in straight sets 25-17, 25-19 and 25-17 and then downed Mary Washington 27-25, 25-21 and 25-19.
Freshmen Riley O'Dowd and Kody Dillon were each selected to the All-Tournament team to represent Susquehanna.
O'Dowd and Dillon had some of the top offensive numbers in all four matches for the River Hawks. O'Dowd collected 10 kills and 13 kills Friday against Muhlenberg and Christopher Newport respectively. On Saturday, she had five kills in limited action against Keystone and added 13 kills in the win over Mary Washington.
Dillon added 12 kills in the Muhlenberg match and chipped in seven kills and nine digs against Mary Washington.
Five players had double-digit kills against Muhlenberg as Brooke Lacesa had 13, Janai Henderson added 14 and Hannah Lyons recorded 11 to compliment the 12 Dillon kills and 10 O'Dowd kills for the River Hawks. Lindsay Pugh handed out 36 assists. She added 41 assists in the Christopher Newport match.
Caroline Beohm had a weekend high with 25 digs and three aces against the Mules and eclipsed the 1,000-career dig plateau over the weekend. Lizzie Herestofa added 29 digs against Muhlenberg and 28 against Christopher Newport.
The River Hawks return to action Tuesday with a midweek 7 p.m. match at Dickinson College.
