River Hawk Women’s Soccer Claims 13th Annual River Derby

Box Score WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Susquehanna University women's soccer team, the reigning Landmark Conference champion, used goals from three different players to post a 3-0 season-opening road win over Lycoming College (0-1) in the 13th Annual River Derby. The River Hawks (1-0) have won the Derby six years in a row with Lycoming's last victory coming in 2013.

How It Happened
  • Susquehanna dominated the contest from the opening whistle, peppering Jess Riorden with 22 shots. Riorden was more than up to the challenge as she finished the game with 19 saves to keep the Warriors within striking distance.
  • First-year forward Emily Wertz (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) collected her first collegiate goal in the 17th minute to put the River Hawks ahead 1-0. Thanks to Riorden's nine first-half saves, Lycoming headed into halftime down just one goal.
  • Ten minutes into the second half, sophomore forward Anna Werner (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin), the reigning Landmark Rookie of the Year, handed SU a two-goal advantage after receiving a pass from freshman midfielder Gillian Maack (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin).
  • Sophomore forward Caroline Lewis (Ellicott City, MD/Howard) completed the hat trick for the River Hawks with a goal in the 68th minute off an assist from Werner.
 
Inside the Box Score
  • The River Hawks finished the contest with 29 shots while notching a 5-0 margin in corner kicks.
  • Lycoming was limited to just one shot in the 32nd minute of the first half.
 
Top Performers
  • Werner paced SU in the season-opening win with a goal and an assist while junior captain Madison Welliver (Turbotville, Pa./Warrior Run) and sophomore Chloe Wieczkowski (Bordentown, N.J./Bordentown Regional) split equal time in goal to combine for the shutout win.
  • Riorden recorded 19 stops in the season-opening loss for the Warriors.
