The River Hawks faced the Bison of Bucknell on Sunday, October 24
th in Sunbury. It was an uphill battle for the River Hawks' as their short bench faced a nearly full bench for the Bison. The River Hawks would play a defensive/opportunistic game, with an emphasis on covering their defensive zone while seeking to take advantage of offensive opportunities as they arose.
The Bison would move out to a 2-0 lead by the middle of the first period. However, the River Hawks would make some adjustments and come back with goals from
Liam Hartmann late in the first period, a powerplay goal from
Alex Stein midway through the second period, followed by goal from
Chris Ciccarello shortly thereafter. The SU powerplay goal would come only 5-seconds in to the powerplay.
The River Hawks would be tested throughout the balance of the second period but would hold off the Bison's potent offense behind the stellar goaltending of
Nic Manning, who would stop (61) shots throughout the game. The River Hawks would carry their lead through the early minutes of the third period until the Bison would be awarded a controversial goal in what was arguably a no-goal for multiple reasons. SU's netminder appeared to have the puck controlled, but no whistle occurred. A scrum ensued in front of the net with a Bison player(s) pig-piling up in the goal crease, inhibiting SU's Manning from maintaining control of the puck. After a few seconds of what seemed like an eternity, the puck mysteriously appeared to have crossed the goal line, knotting the score at 3-3. SU players would vehemently appeal the referee decision, but to no avail. It would prove to a pivotal point in the game.
The Bison would then go on to score the go-ahead goal merely seconds later as the River Hawks were still reeling from the previous call. A time-out to regroup could not stop the bleeding as the Bison would then go on to lay heavy body checks on SU's deflated players for the next several minutes of the game, putting SU's leading scorer and team captain
Griffin Erdely out of the game early in the third period. The Bison offense would rack up 2 additional goals to defeat the River Hawks by a final score of 6-3 in a game that was much more competitive most of the way than the final stats would indicate.
The River Hawks drop to 1-2 on the season. Up next for the River Hawks are the UMBC Retrievers on Saturday, October 30
th at 9:15 PM, followed by the Diplomats of Franklin & Marshall at 3:45 PM on Sunday, October 31
