SELINSGROVE, PA (November 17, 2021) -- The Susquehanna University football team tied their program record for All-Centennial Conference players Wednesday, as the squad garnered 14 accolades including a program-high nine on the First Team as announced by the conference office.
Offensively, seniors tight end Micheal Lefever and offensive linement
Dalton Simpson and
Cole Spencer earned First Team Offensive spots, while the defensive unit say seniors
Craig Roumes,
Brendan Krumenacker,
Sal Gurnari and junior
Aaron Beverly earn spots. The River Hawk specialists of placekicker
Elijah Hoffman and punter
Clay Olley each also were selected to the First Team.
The SU offense also saw junior running back
Frankie Negrini, senior wide receiver
Kyle Good and sophomore offensive lineman
Nick Gonzalez earn Second Team accolades, while senior offensive lineman
Mark Ferris, Jr. and junior defensive back
David Gilchrist were Honorable Mentions. Senior defensive back
Julian Young was tabled to the conference's All-Sportsmanship Team.
The 14 All-Centennial Conference honorees tied the program record set in 2019, while the nine on the first team eclipsed the previous record of eight set back during that 10-1 season for Susquehanna in 2019.
Lefever had a breakout season for the River Hawks as a senior, as he was third on the team in catches with 33 while leading the squad with 515 receiving yards. His six touchdown grabs were second on the squad, while pacing the team with a 15.6 yards per catch clip. Lefever led all Centennial Conference tight ends in catches, yards, touchdowns, receptions per game and yards per game.
The offensive line was anchored by the play of Simpson and Spencer, who routinely graded out as some of the best linemen in the Centennial Conference. The pair helped the River Hawks to the third-best offensive unit in total yards, while helping lead the conference in rushing yards with 1606. Simpson and Spencer also were part of a group that allowed only 12 sacks all season, while averaging 4.5 yards per carry. Both Spencer and Simpson were repeat All-Centennial Conference honorees.
Defensively, senior
Sal Gurnari earned his first Centennial honor was the defensive lineman anchored a defensive unit that allowed only 269.7 yards per game. The 74.8 per game on the ground allowed by SU was second in the Centennial, as Gurnari made 41 stops and five stops for loss.
Roumes repeated as an All-Centennial Conference First Teamer as the senior linebacker was first on the team with 66 total stops. He added two interceptions, six pass break-ups and 9.5 tackles for loss. Roumes also added a forced fumble, fumble recovery and 3.0 sacks.
Krumenacker finished second on the team in stops as a senior, as he posted 54 tackles along with a team-leading 12 tackles for loss. Krumenacker also chalked up five pass break-ups and 3.5 sacks on the year. The senior was key in helping the Susquehanna defensive unit finish third in sacks, and first in fumble recoveries in 2021.
Junior
Aaron Beverly had a strong season for SU in the defensive backfield, as he totalled 27 tackles to go with a team-best nine pass break-ups. His nine pass disruptions were the second-most in the Centennial Conference in 2021, while he added an interception against Juniata College in the regular season finale.
Elijah Hoffman earned First Team honors for the first time in his career, as he was Second Team back in 2019. Hoffman finished his senior campaign 12-of-15 on field goal attempts, posting a career-high 44 yard field goal at Ursinus College. Hoffman is the program's career leader in extra points, and is also the team leader with 84 points this season.
Olley had a monster season for the River Hawks, as he led the conference in punting average with a 40.0 net punting mark. He finished with eight punts out of his 37 inside the 20, and was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week after his huge performance against Dickinson College September 25. He also posted five punts of over 50 yards on the season.
Negrini was the feature tailback for the River Hawks in 2021, as the team led the Centennial Conference in rushing yards. Negrini posted his first Centennial Conference award after rushing for 686 yards and 11 touchdowns, averaging 4.9 yards per carry on 140 totes. Negrini finished third in the Centennial in rushing yardage, and third in rushing touchdowns.
Good was an Honorable Mention back in 2019, and moves up to the Second Team after finishing with 34 receptions and a team-best eight touchdowns. He tied for fifth in the Centennial in scoring grabs and now has 16 touchdown grabs for his career at Susquehanna.
Gonzalez earned his first career Centennial award in his first season of game action, as the sophomore left tackle protected the blind side all season for quarterback
Michael Ruisch. He also helped the offensive unit finish third in passing yardage, while the 228 first downs were also third in the league.
Ferris was also a monster on the offensive line, as four of the starting five linemen for SU earned a spot on the Centennial teams. Ferris helped SU to the conference's third-best third-down conversion rate at 41 percent, while also helping SU rush for over 114 or more yards in every game in 2021.
Gilchrist also picked up his first career accolade on Wednesday, as the junior tallied 28 tackles while adding a sack, two interceptions and five pass break-ups. Gilchrist chalked up his first career interception at F&M, and followed that up with another at home against Gettysburg.
Senior defensive back
Julian Young earned All-Sportsmanship Team, as he was a force on special teams all season for the River Hawks.
SU will take on Widener University Saturday at 1 p.m. in Doug Arthur Stadium in the Centennial-MAC Bowl Series to finish their 2021 campaign.
