SELINSGROVE, PA - Saturday's Susquehanna Homecoming festivities seemed to spark an already-electric River Hawks football squad to their third consecutive game with at least 50 points against Catholic, beating their Landmark rivals by a resounding 69-13 score. The offense maintained their intensity, highlighted by quarterback
Josh Ehrlich throwing again for five touchdown passes as the offense combined for 546 total yards and nine touchdowns between two on the ground and seven through the air. Susquehanna runs its Landmark record to 3-0 and 5-2 overall heading into its first-ever meeting at Western Connecticut State next Saturday.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Kicker Dominic Bourgeois kicked off the scoring literally with a 42-yard field goal on the game's opening drive, his first of two on the day as he remains perfect on the season at 8-for-8.Â
- Quarterback Josh Ehrlich got the crowd on its feet when he connected with tight end Michael Robbins on a 54-yard score, with the open Robbins catching it at the Catholic 33 and running to daylight for the first touchdown of the day. He finished with two catches on the day for 57 yards.
- The defense helped set up Susquehanna's next scoring drive with their first of two interceptions on the day. Catholic quarterback Charles Gulbin watched as his pass tipped off his receiver's helmet over the middle and caught out of the air by Vin Raniero, who ran it back to the three yard line. This led to a 34-yard field goal by Bourgeois to close out the first-quarter scoring as the River Hawks led 13-0.Â
- Susquehanna's ground game got moving to begin the second-half scoring as sophomore running back Rahshan La Mons powered his way in for a 14-yard touchdown run to make it 20-0 Susquehanna early in the period. La Mons' day on the ground was modest with 41 yards rushing on ten carries, with his touchdown run marking his longest of the day.
- Another River Hawks interception led to another River Hawks score. Once again Gulbin's pass was stolen, this time by Berkeley Wagner who ran it back to Catholic's 48 yard line, with an unnecessary roughness by the Cardinals putting SU in business at the Catholic 33.Â
- Fellow running back Tommy Grabowski got his house call with goal line offense set up on the one yard line, pounding his way in to make it 27-0 with 7:09 to play in the half. He finished with 29 yards on seven carries.Â
- The Cardinals took advantage of some Susquehanna defensive penalties to draw back in the game with a touchdown drive capped by a one-yard quarterback sneak from Charles Gulbin. The extra-point attempt was no good, however, as the River Hawks maintained a 21-point lead at 27-6 with 49 seconds left to play in the first half.
- Before Catholic could feel comfortable with just facing a three-touchdown deficit at halftime, Susquehanna put them back on its heels with a quick scoring drive that only took 14 seconds. Getting the ball at its own 17 with 40 seconds left, Ehrlich completed a ball to Robert Stolfa for 44 yards, then found an open Daniel Growney down the sidelines for a 39-yard touchdown connection as the River Hawks took a 34-6 lead into halftime.Â
- Catholic received the ball to begin the second half and used the opening drive for another touchdown. Once again aided by defensive penalties, Gulbin found Cade Chrebet for an 18-yard touchdown pass to reduce the deficit back to 21 at 34-13, draining nearly seven minutes off the clock.
- The smaller deficit was short-lived as the River Hawks countered with another scoring drive. La Mons again provided the offensive fireworks as Ehrlich found him on a screen pass and took it the distance to make it 41-13. It stood as La Mons' only reception of the day.Â
- The River Hawks defense forced the Cardinals into a three-and-out, setting up perhaps the special teams' biggest play of the season. Logan Rhoades took advantage of a delayed snap by Catholic punter Kieran Brenner, blocking the punt that went straight up in the air and scooped by Omari Cofield to set Susquehanna up at the Cardinals 29. It took one play for the offense to return the favor as Ehrlich found a wide-open Carter McCauley in the back left corner of the endzone to widen the River Hawks' lead to 48-13 to wrap the third quarter.
- Ehrlich took the field for one final scoring drive as he finished his day completing 17-of-19 for 294 yards and five touchdowns, while running seven times for 94 yards and a long of 25. He used his last appearance behind center hooking up with senior receiver Hunter Morgenroth for a seven-yard touchdown to lead 55-13 with 10:52 to go in the fourth.
- The defense pounced on another turnover as a bobbled handoff exchange put the ball on the carpet and recovered by Brayden Nolan at Catholic's 24.
- Backup quarterback Tommy Wright took the field to take advantage of the short field, finding fellow senior wideout John Kradenski for a 22-yard touchdown for Kradenski's first touchdown catch of the season and a 62-13 lead with 8:12 to go.
- Another Catholic three and out gave the River Hawks another opportunity at their own 46. Wright again looked downfield and threaded a needle to find Connor Daly through three defenders for a 25 yard score. Wright completed all four of his passes for 59 yards and two TD's.Â
- Quarterback Sam McCracken took the field on Susquehanna's final drive to close things out, carving out an 11-yard run to move the chains and tick off the final seconds.Â
- Between all the SU quarterbacks the receiving corps. was pleased with the variety. 12 River Hawks caught the ball on Saturday, amassing 21 receptions for 353 yards. Growney was the breadwinner with four catches for 67 yards, while Stolfa caught three for 58 yards and McCauley two for 42.Â
- The running game amassed 193 yards, with Ehrlich's 94-yard day leading the way. Backs Daniel Francis and Drew Hutchins each got two carries, with Francis spanning 11 yards and Hutchins ten.Â
- The defense totaled three sacks, while finishing with three takeaways between the two interceptions and fumble recovery as Catholic was held to 243 total yards between 172 yards passing and 71 on the ground. Despite leading in time of possession at 34:39 and earning six of their 17 first downs on penalties, the visitors averaged just 3.4 yards per play and committed three fumbles, losing two of them.Â
- Berkeley Wagner led with seven total tackles for Susquehanna, including four solo, while accruing one pass breakup to go with his interception.
- Galen Limantour was all over Susquehann's menacing defensive front, coming through on six tackles, including four solo and two for loss, along with one sack. Jaydon Handy earned one sack on the day with four total tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss. Brady Rosencrans had the remaining Susquehanna sack on a day where he had two total tackles and 1.5 for loss.
RECORD CHASING
- Ehrlich's five touchdowns Saturday moved him into second all-time with 64 career touchdown passes at Susquehanna, surpassing Mike Bowman's 63 from 1999-02 and 25 from his predecessor Michael Ruisch's 89 from 2018-22. He also eclipsed the 6,000 passing yards mark, becoming the fourth SU quarterback ever to do so between Rusich's 9,186, Bowman's 8,160, and Nick Crusco's 8,318 from 2014-17.Â
