GOAL POST TROPHY, PERKOVICH'S UNBEATEN MARK VS. JUNIATA ON THE LINE SATURDAY
Saturday marks another chapter in the rivalry between Susquehanna and Juniata, as head coach
Tom Perkovich looks to land his eighth victory over the Eagles in as many matchups dating back to his first season in 2015. The River Hawks take with them to Huntingdon the Goal Post Trophy to mark the rivalry contest, which has remained in Coach Perk's office. The one thing certainly different this weekend is the conference banner this historic matchup plays under with both teams' entries to the Landmark Conference for football. Both teams have resided in the MAC and Centennial prior to this year's realignment.
The River Hawks, now ranked 12th and 13th in the D3football.com and AFCA national polls, respectively, currently have the inner track to the Landmark Conference title with a 2-0 conference mark under their belt after beating Catholic in the league opener 50-21 and rolling past Keystone last week 69-0. Juniata has had one Landmark matchup so far this year against Wilkes in a 63-14 defeat. The Eagles' lone victory so far this season was a 31-21 non-conference win versus Hartwick in week three.
RIVER HAWKS LAND SEVERAL MILESTONES IN 69-0 WIN AT KEYSTONE...
It had been 85 years since Susquehanna faced off against Keystone in a football matchup. By Saturday's game's end, another date from yesteryear was pulled out to reference the River Hawks' 69-0 victory over the Giants. That year was 1919 when SU won a game versus St. Francis 95-0, leaving Saturday's contest as SU's highest margin of victory since the St. Francis game. The victory also gave Susquehanna its 17th straight regular season victory, passing the previous school record of 16 set by the 1985-87 era of SU Football, with the unbeaten 1986 season serving as the cornerstone of that period.
The River Hawks used ten touchdowns to set the lengthy distance apart, beginning with receiver
Warren Griffith getting his first touchdown of the season on a 16-yard pass from
Josh Ehrlich. Susquehanna turned to the running game in the rainy conditions at La Plume to score the next seven touchdowns, with a pair each from Ehrlich and running back
D.K. Wyche. The River Hawks totaled 537 yards of offense with 380 on the ground, led by
Tommy Grabowski's 144 rushing yards who added another touchdown to his season total of six. The second half offered plenty of scoring opportunities for more River Hawks, including a passing strike from lefty QB
Bobby Croyle to senior receiver
Cole Cooper. The defense also chimed in on the scoring, with
Josh Lesesne taking an interception back 44 yards for the last touchdown of the day, giving him three total touchdowns on the season. Susquehanna totaled 35:36 of possession time and a staggering 34 first downs. Keystone made only seven first downs and just 51 yards of total offense, never reaching the red zone.
