#10 Football Clashes at Catholic in Interstate Landmark Opener

WASHINGTON, D.C. - After a positive start to their road season last Saturday at Western New England in a 34-21 victory, the Susquehanna University football team head to their second away game this Saturday at Catholic in their Landmark Conference opener at 1 p.m. The River Hawks take with them in their first-ever visit to the CUA campus a 3-1 record and number-ten rankings from D3football.com and the AFCA.

In both teams' first-ever matchup last season, also a Landmark season opener and Susquehanna's home debut, the River Hawks handily took a 50-21 ledger over the Cardinals. It was a game where all three phases of the game were in full effect for SU, featuring five touchdowns from the offense and one on special teams, as well as three field goals from then-junior kicker Christian Colasurdo. The defense also proved themselves to be in mid-season form with four sacks and one interception. Many of the playmakers from that game are back for the River Hawks, including quarterback Josh Ehrlich, fresh off of Landmark Offensive Player of the Week accolades following a prolific day Saturday against the Golden Bears. He threw for 23-of-29 for 205 yards and two touchdowns, while running in the game's first touchdown to open the scoring where he netted a game-high 91 yards on the ground on nine rushes, an average of 10.1 yards per carry. Ehrlich, an established dual threat, has become more potent throwing the ball this season, already with over 1,000 yards passing at 1,026, good for first in the Landmark, as well as a league-best ten passing touchdowns and zero interceptions. On the ground he ranks sixth in the Landmark and first among quarterbacks with 263 yards on 50 rushes.

STARS SHINE BRIGHT TO OUTDUEL WESTERN NEW ENGLAND
Many familiar faces came out last Saturday to contribute heavily in the 34-21 win at Western New England. While 38 points was not enough to overthrow the two-ranked and defending national champion SUNY Cortland in Week 3, the River Hawks' 34 points on the Golden Bears proved to be more than plenty to return to the win column thanks to Ehrlich contributing the team's first three touchdowns. He capped off a successful opening drive with a two-yard keeper to get SU out in front 7-0. Though WNE retorted with a game-tying touchdown, the junior quarterback went right back to work, finding the next touchdown through the air and to a recognizable target, Kyle Howes, for a 40-yard strike down the middle to regain the lead near the end of the first quarter. Early in the second with the ball on the opposing three yard line, Ehrlich connected with running back Tommy Grabowski on an out route to the right side for a 21-7 lead. With just under one minute to play in the half, rookie back Rahshan La Mons found the endzone for the sixth time this season on a four-yard run for SU's largest lead of the game at 28-7. This was quickly erased when the Golden Bears hurried in the game's next score as the first-half clock expired when QB Tyler Borwhat hit Brady Lafferty on a 14-yard connection.

The offensive outburst on both sides simmered down in the second half as both teams manged just one touchdown apiece. The biggest offensive play of the second half arguably was La Mons' second touchdown of the day on a 40-yard scamper. Taking the ball off-tackle to the left, he juked a defender to break into the secondary and take it down the left side for a 34-14 lead. The defense allowed just one more score from Western New England early in the fourth as they got to the quarterback Borwhat four times, courtesy of 1.5 from Drew Robinson, one each from Jake Schultes and Josh Buck, and 0.5 from Josh Buck. Susquehanna showcased a balanced offensive attack with 407 total yards, split between 205 yards passing and 202 on the ground. La Mons accounted for 88 of those yards on 16 carries, an average of 5.5 per carry. The receiving corps. was balanced, as well, led by Chris Bookter's 41 yards receiving on four catches and Howes' 46 yards on six receptions. Tight end Rowen Hershey had a season-best 43 yards receiving on three catches.
