Senior Day, Landmark Aspirations Await Susquehanna Saturday vs. Moravian

SELINSGROVE, PA – It will be Senior Day for Susquehanna Football and Cheerleading this Saturday as the River Hawks welcome Moravian for a 1 p.m. Landmark Conference matchup. They and the rest of Susquehanna's outfit have a lot more to play for as the team can clinch the Landmark Conference championship with a win. Susquehanna and Moravian are the last two teams standing in the conference with unblemished league marks, with the River Hawks 4-0 in conference play (7-1 overall) and Moravian 3-0 versus the Landmark (5-2 overall).

As of this time last week, there were three unbeaten Landmark teams in conference play, with Wilkes standing as the one extra carrying a 3-0 ledger. Susquehanna traveled to the Colonels' battlefield last Saturday to come out as one of the two last unbeatens in a 48-21 victory where they scored the first 28 points of the contest. Quarterback Josh Ehrlich dialed in another fine performance on his way to his third Landmark Offensive Athlete of the Week with 322 yards passing and three touchdown passes, along with his first career touchdown reception that opened the scoring when he caught an option pass from running back Rahshan La Mons. Along with senior receiver Kyle Howes, who hauled in two touchdown receptions Saturday, this QB-RB-WR combo have formed the three-headed monster of the SU offense's scoring output this season, netting 35 of the team's 53 touchdowns.

Checking out the River Hawks by the numbers, they maintained their number six ranking from the AFCA Coaches' Poll and seven by D3football.com. This week also marked the latest NCAA Division III Power Index (NPI) rankings that deemed Susquehanna 16th with a 69.155 NPI. New to the NCAA this season to help better determine the postseason tournament field, the NPI is a system that houses the division's statistical data and objectively applies the selection criteria to the data based on the sport committee's established weighted criteria. The NPI takes into consideration winning percentage; strength of schedule; home-away multiplier; quality win bonus; and overtime results (when relevant).

The River Hawks' defense had a great day at the expense of Wilkes quarterback Xavier Powell. While the Colonels' QB completed 15-of-43 passes for two touchdowns and 253 yards, he was intercepted three times, a season best for Susquehanna, while taken down for one sack. His opening interception in the second quarter set the tone for the rest of the game. Behind 14-0 and considerably good field position to try to cut SU's lead in half, Wilkes went to the trick plays to set up a potential score. A perceived handoff was thrown back to Powell who had an open receiver down the left side. His release of the ball coincided with safety Andrew Wells beating down on intended target Jimmy Johnson. He batted the ball away and into the arms of linebacker Drew Robinson for his first pick of the year. Interceptions followed from Dominic Winn and Nick Campbell. Steven Seibert got to Powell for the unit's lone sack of the day.

Moravian comes in looking to spoil the party on Susquehanna's hopes of clinching the Landmark title with three weeks to play. The River Hawks have their bye week set for next Saturday, Nov. 9 before traveling to face Lycoming on Saturday, Nov. 16, while the Greyhounds square off with Lycoming on Nov. 9 and closing with Wilkes Nov. 16. Moravian split its first four non-conference games with wins over Utica and Morrisville State and defeats to noteworthy opponents Muhlenberg and Hobart. They pulled out Landmark victories over Keystone (55-14), Catholic (34-14) and Juniata (35-13).

Moving late into the year the team has lofty spots on the record boards. Howes continues to climb the receiving charts for catches in a career with 172, good for third all-time, as well as his 2,465 yards ranking third all-time. He moved into sole possession of second place with 30 touchdown receptions, surpassing Mike Ritter's total of 28 from 2008-12. Ehrlich's 23 touchdown passes this year is third-best all-time, while his 1,968 passing yards is good for 12th. He has completed 137-of-191 passes with just one interception. On the career boards Ehrlich has entered the top ten, including sixth with 36 passing touchdowns and 287 completions, as well as ninth with 3,530 passing yards. Defensively, Jake Schultes is fifth with 12 sacks, while Garrett Carter is sixth with 11.
