Box Score 2 ONEONTA, NY - The Susquehanna University women's soccer team picked up two consecutive wins, evened their record, and captured the Mayor's Cup Challenge trophy all in a weekend's work with a 2-1 win Saturday at Hartwick and a 2-0 blanking of SUNY Oneonta on Sunday.
Ava Billmeyer,
Amelia Kopp,
Chloe Michaels and
Maesie Baker were named to the All-Tournament Team, with Billmeyer named Offensive MVP and Baker Defensive MVP.
After two adverse matchups to start the year against Misericordia and Haverford going goal-less, the River Hawks made the most of their scoring opportunities in the Catskills as they overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit to the Hartwick Hawks with second-half scores from
Chloe Michaels in the 55th minute and first-year
Ava Billmeyer with the game-winner in the 65th minute. Senior goalie
Kayleigh Saboja defended the net all 90 minutes, picking up the win with two saves to her credit. In a defensive battle, Susquehanna outshot Hartwick 9-5 and 6-3 in shots on goal. SU also kept the game on their fellow Hawks' end with eight corner kicks to the hosts' four.
First-year keeper
Katie Henchy fought through the rigors of her first two career starts allowing 11 combined goals with the start and shutout on SUNY Oneonta Sunday for her first collegiate win. She picked up five saves as the front picked her up with one score for each half, a late first-half goal by
Amelia Kopp from
Ava Billmeyer in the 43rd minute and an insurance goal in the 78th minute from Billmeyer. It's worth noting that both of SU's goals were the team's only shots on the goal on the afternoon, but perhaps even more impressive was the River Hawks' back line holding down the Red Dragons despite the hosts leading 15-3 in shots and 5-2 in shots on goal. Oneonta also held a 7-1 advantage on corner kicks.
Susquehanna returns to the home front on Wednesday with another non-conference meeting against Marymount at 7 p.m. from Sassafras Field.
