Women Win Third Straight on the Road at Juniata

HUNTINGDON, PA - Susquehanna women's basketball enjoyed their third straight win Wednesday night in a 75-53 victory at Juniata. Along with their preceding wins over Lycoming and Wilkes, the River Hawks run their overall record to 9-7 and 6-3 in the Landmark, giving them sole possession of fourth place in the standings.

While Susquehanna opened the game on a Carly George layup, the Eagles looked to get a leg up early when they answered with a Steph Emert three for a one-point lead, then countering Lauren Klein's ensuing three with a Haily Sherman layup to tie things up at 5-5. That all changed when Susquehanna rode a 13-3 run to go up 18-8, with George and Klein combining for ten of those points. At game's end Klein finished with 14 points, making 5-of-7 field goals and a perfect 2-for-2 on threes, while George landed a double-double with an even 13 points and 13 rebounds, connecting on 6-of-8 from the floor. While this SU duo helped give the River Hawks the early lead, it was Sydney Weyant who came off the bench to post a game-leading 15 points, making 6-of-7 field goals and 2-of-3 triples. In all Susquehanna connected on 9-of-20 threes, with Kenzie Selvaggi adding two more and one each from Grace Meehan, Julia Pinckert and Annie Greek.

The River Hawks shot 50.9 percent for the game on 28-of-55 shooting and 10-of-18 from the free throw line, while trigger-happy Juniata made just 20-of-77 from the field with 5 made threes on 24 tries and 8-of-10 from the line. Zoie Maffei flirted with a double-double for Susquehanna with nine points and nine rebounds, while Pinckert's eight boards contributed to Susquehanna winning the rebounding battle 51-40. The River Hawks led 26-13 after the first quarter, with their lead never going back down to single digits the rest of the game. Their largest lead came late in the game when a free throw by Meehan gave SU a 24-point lead on Juniata at 75-51. Wednesday night marked Susquehanna's ninth straight win over the Eagles dating back to 2019, giving head coach Gabby Holko a 9-0 record against Juniata as head coach of the River Hawks.

Now at the turn of their Landmark season, the River Hawks prepare to rematch a Moravian team on Saturday that they defeated 70-68 in Bethlehem on Nov. 23. The Greyhounds sit at eighth in the Landmark with a 2-7 league mark and 4-12 overall. Susquehanna holds a one-game lead in the standings over fifth-place Drew, whom the River Hawks defeated on the road 75-64 on Jan. 8. Following Saturday the River Hawks prepare to do battle once more with nationally-ranked conference foes on the road at Catholic on Wednesday, Jan. 29 and at Elizabethtown Saturday, Feb. 1.
