Second-Half Surge Sends River Hawks Soaring in Season Sweep of Moravian

SELINSGROVE, PA – The wins and the shots kept falling for Susquehanna women's basketball on Saturday against Moravian in the form of a 76-63 Landmark victory. Perhaps most satisfying was the River Hawks vanquishing a late first-half deficit with 50 second-half points, led by a career-high 28 from Carly George, who also tied her career high of 14 rebounds, and 20 points from Kenzie Selvaggi. Saturday's win marked SU's first season sweep of the season after winning at Moravian in November 70-68.

Susquehanna opened the game with a 9-2 lead before Moravian moved in to take a pair of four-point leads in the first quarter, leading after one, 16-13. The Greyhounds pulled ahead to as much as six in the second quarter up 26-20 following an 8-0 run, eventually taking a 28-26 lead into halftime. Much of this early success was due in part to Moravian's Juliana Vassallo dropping 13 of her 24 points in the opening session, making six of her first 11 field goals along with the first of her game-leading four 3-pointers.

Almost like magic, head coach Gabby Holko's team broke the shooting spell that saw them make just 31.3 percent in the first half (10-of-32) by making 52.9 in the final 20 (18-of-34). George made 19 of her points in the second half, making 7-of-9 from the floor, whereas Selvaggi drained 13 second-half points with a pair of 3-pointers. The River Hawks outscored the Greyhounds in the third quarter, 24-17, then poured on 26 more in the second half to Moravian's 18. Tied at 52-52 early in the fourth quarter, an Annie Greek 3-pointer officially marked the end of the Greyhounds' chances of taking the game back over as Susquehanna eventually built its lead to 16 by game's end.

Selvaggi made a team-leading three 3-pointers in the team's 7-of-25 day from behind the arc, accompanied by Greek making 2-of-5 threes towards seven points and one each from Lauren Klein and Sydney Weyant. Klein finished with five points and eight rebounds, while Weyant totaled three points with three boards. Julia Pinckert offered Susquehanna another lift in rebounding with ten total boards as the River Hawks led 49-41 under the rim. Zoie Maffei hit on seven points with three rebounds.

Susquehanna earns its fourth straight win and drives its record to 10-7 overall and 7-3 in the Landmark, maintaining fourth place in the standings with a two-game buffer between them and Goucher and Drew, both 5-5 in the conference. The River Hawks' only three conference defeats were at the hands of the three teams above them in the standings – nationally-ranked Scranton, Elizabethtown and Catholic. The River Hawks prepare to do battle at #13/20 Catholic this Wednesday at 6 p.m., then heading down the road again next Saturday for #22/23 Elizabethtown.
