Susquehanna Puts Up Strong Fight vs. York in Scheib Tournament Championship Game

SELINSGROVE, PA - Despite three scorers in double digits for Susquehanna men's basketball on Saturday and holding several sizable leads throughout, the River Hawks fell to visiting York College (RV) in the championship of the inaugural Mike Schieb '78 Tip-Off Tournament.

HOW IT WENT DOWN
  • York got off to a hot start early, making three of its first five three-point attempts in the game's opening nine minutes and taking a 21-12 lead. Jayden Rowe and Anthony Sciote scored 15 of the team's 21 points during that stretch, one that forced Susquehanna to take a timeout at the 11:03 mark.
  • First-year K.J. Carson made a three-pointer coming out of the timeout, one that jump-started an 18-12 run for the River Hawks through the rest of the half. Billy Anderson scored six points alongside Audric Washington's four points in that 11-minute stretch, which brought York's lead down to just three heading into the break (33-30).
  • Mario Castro Sanchez scored in the first minute coming out of the half, making an early three-pointer. Castro Sanchez made two threes in the game, scoring eight total points.
  • Senior guard Jackson Van Wagener significantly shifted the momentum for Susquehanna in the second half's opening minutes, assisting on a three-pointer made by Brandon Lavitt and coming up with a steal-and-score that forced the Spartans to call a timeout with 16:14 remaining.
  • The Spartans then went on a 19-6 run spanning the game's final nine minutes, thanks in part to 70% shooting from the field amid a dry spell for Susquehanna.Van Wagener led the River Hawks in scoring with 13 points, alongside Billy Anderson and Lavitt, who both scored 11.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Susquehanna controlled much of the box score in the first half, but York's 12-for-16 performance from the free-throw line outmatched just two free throws for the River Hawks. Susquehanna led York in most first-half shooting statistics, including field goals made (12-9), field-goal percentage (42.9%-37.5%), three-pointers made (4-3), and three-point percentage (33.3%-25%).
  • Washington led the team in rebounds, grabbing a game-high nine. He also had three steals.
  • Alex Katusha and Van Wagener led the team in assists, each dishing out three.
UP NEXT FOR THE RIVER HAWKS
  • The River Hawks begin Landmark Conference play on Wednesday, November 19, hosting Juniata at O.W. Houts Gymnasium at 7 p.m.
