SALISBURY, MD - Brianna Jones threw a nine-inning shutout in the win against The College of New Jersey in Salisbury, Md. The junior pitcher maintained perfect composure on the mound, shutting out the first opponent of the afternoon. Jones scored the game winning run in the bottom of the 9th inning, following a double by Katelyn Dugery. The River Hawks fell to the Monarchs of King's College (Pa.) in the second match up of the first day of the Salisbury Margie Knight Tournament.
Susquehanna 1, TCNJ 0 (9 innings)
Brianna Jones did a little of everything for the River Hawks in the nail-biting win over the Lions. The SU athlete single-handedly threw a shutout game, while also being the winning run to cross home plate. Katelyn Dugery was SU's other hero on the afternoon, sending a ball to deep center field to push Jones across the plate. The match up featured a defensive pitching battle throughout, as each team left a slew of runners in scoring position, primarily because of the heroics of the players on the mound. Jones finished the afternoon throwing a complete game, allowing only five hits. Four strikeouts and zero walks pushed SU over the Lions in the bottom of the ninth inning.
The fielding defense for the River Hawks prevailed as Lexi Palumbo would assist with multiple outs against the Lions. The River Hawks advance to 2-7 on the season following the win against TCNJ.
King's (Pa.) 5, Susquehanna 1
Susquehanna struck first in the second match up against the Monarchs of King's College (Pa.). The scoring concluded with the River Hawks banking in the first inning. The Monarchs scored five runs in the remainder of the match up clinching the win over SU 5-1. Susquehanna falls to 2-8 on the season.
Ashley Carlson earned the start for SU allowing two earned runs in three innings on the mound. Hannah Foust replaced Carlson, allowing three earned runs in the match up.
