SELINSGROVE, PA - Susquehanna women's basketball had all the right energy clicking at the same time Saturday in an important Landmark Conference game against RV Elizabethtown, storming out to a 10-0 at the outset and never looking back for a 75-62 victory. The River Hawks' starting five combined for all but two of the team's points Saturday, led by
Carly George and
Annie Greek each dropping 21 points. SU and E-Town even their season series as both are tied for third in the Landmark standings at 7-3.
HOW IT WENT DOWN
- Determined to finish what they started at E-Town in November, the River Hawks stormed out of the gate with a 10-0 run, catapulted by back-to-back threes from Annie Greek and a pair of field goals from Julia Roth and Carly George.
- Susquehanna led by as much as 11 points in the first quarter up 17-6 before the Blue Jays closed the gap to six by quarter's end at 19-13.
- The River Hawks pushed back to start the second quarter, regaining their double-digit lead and adding another 19-point period for a 38-25 lead at the half.
- Greek was 4-of-5 on threes in the first half as she had 13 points through the first 20 minutes. Roth, meanwhile, had eight first-half points with a game-leading six rebounds towards a potential 11th double-double on the season. Julia Pinckert and Sydney Weyant each had one 3-pointer as the team shot 6-of-12 from long range compared to Elizabethtown's 2-of-7.
- Susquehanna fared similar results in a closely-contested third quarter. The Blue Jays posted their highest quarter point total to that point with 17, only for Susquehanna to counter with 18 for a 56-42 lead through three.
- Several E-Town turnovers and offensive fouls in the third quarter set Susquehanna up for success, especially as George contributed six points in the frame and the orange and maroon hitting two key field goals in the final 30 seconds, a layup from Zoie Maffei and a layup from Pinckert.
- The River Hawks stayed on the attack entering the fourth quarter as George got the team's first three markers and Weyant making back-to-back threes for a 65-51 lead with under five minutes to play.
- E-Town only managed to cut it to ten points with the River Hawks up 72-62 under one minute to play. George offered the team's last field goal as she finished with 21 points, while Greek made a pair of free throws to put her over the 20-point game mark with a career-high 21, as well.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- SU marked its first victory over the Blue Jays since Jan. 27, 2024 when the River Hawks defeated Elizabethtown in overtime, 65-64. More importantly, the River Hawks and Blue Jays are tied for third in the Landmark standings with a 7-3 league record. Susquehanna is 14-3 overall and Elizabethtown 11-6 overall. Scranton is in first place with a 10-0 league mark, while Catholic is second at 9-1.
- Susquehanna shot 46.9 percent for the first half (15-of-32) compared to E-Town's 32.1 percent (9-of-28) for the sizable halftime lead.
- George, Greek, Weyant, Roth, and Pinckert combined for all but two of the team's points Saturday, led by Greek and George's 21.
- Weyant finished with 11 points, making 3-of-6 threes, while Roth narrowly missed a double-double totaling 11 points with nine boards. Pinckert charted nine points on a 4-for-6 day shooting with three assists and rebounds.
- Zoie Maffei accounted for the team's remaining two points on a basket near the end of the third quarter, while channeling a team-high five assists.
- The Blue Jays' best effort came from Makenna Mummert's 27 points. She made 9-of-19 from the field as Elizabethtown fared just 34.4 percent from the floor (21-of-61), making 7-of-19 threes and 13-of-17 free throws.
- The River Hawks matched or bested E-Town's shooting with a 47.4 field goal percentage (27-of-57), while making 8-of-16 threes and 13-of-20 free throws.
- George's six rebounds gives her 562 for her career, while Roth's team-best nine boards Saturday gives her 559. Pinckert's three assists gives her 361 for her career, standing fifth all-time in the team record books.
