WINCHESTER, VA - The 2026 season began for the Susquehanna women's lacrosse season Saturday as they traveled down to Virginia to take on Shenandoah.
Sloane Coddington led with three goals, while
Abby Andrus and
Sophia Trively each had two against the Hornetes, but it would be the home team that began their season 1-0 with a 15-9 decision over the River Hawks.
HOW IT WENT DOWN
- Shenandoah opened the contest with six straight goals to lead 6-0. Addison Harmel and Alex Ripkin each had two goals in this stretch.
- Susquehanna avoided a first-period shutout when Coddington netted the first of her three goals on the day, assisted by Abigail Holland, with 19 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
- The first several minutes of the second half remained scoreless until Andrus logged her first goal of the season off another assist by Holland to cut the Hornets' lead to 6-2.
- Shenandoah broke its silence when Addison Harmel scored less than one minute later to lead 7-2. It would be their only goal of the period as the River Hawks outscored the Hornets 3-1 in the second after Alena Malinowski and Trively added goals before the first half ended for a 7-4 score at halftime.
- Susquehanna continued to break into its lead as Andrus notched her second goal of the contest to start the third quarter to cut the lead down to 7-5, assisted by Abby DiComes.
- The Hornets took back control of the game with four straight goals over the third and fourth quarters. Emily Ransom added two in this stretch, while Harmel and Ayla Jantz each had one goal.
- The River Hawks attempted one more rally with three unanswered scores from Coddington, DiComes and Trively to make it 11-8, but Shenandoah scored the next two goals and four of the last five to tie down the win. Coddington's third goal Saturday was Susquehanna's lone response in this stretch.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Shenandoah led 29-17 in shots, including 24-15 in shots on goal. The Hornets also won 15 draw controls to the River Hawks' 11, with Lucia Yoder gathering three for Susquehanna.
- Goalie Aerin O'Brien, like she did all last season, played all 60 minutes in net as she tallied nine saves in her season debut. Hornets keeper Maddie Gaboury managed six saves.
- Andrus finished with three points on two goals and one assist, putting her one goal away from 100 career goals, now with 99 in her time as a River Hawk.
- Coddington's three-goal day suggests a sign of things to come for the midfielder poised to step into a bigger role with some key departures from last season. She now has 11 goals after contributing eight as a first-year in 2025.
- Defender Bridget McCann had two caused turnovers, with Coddington and Shea Cina each adding one. Kimberly Nagengast had three ground balls, while Cina and Andrus each had two.
