Softball Makes Final Early-Season Excursion to Virginia for Cross Bay Bash

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Susquehanna's softball team made one final big trip to round out the early part of their season this weekend at the Cross Bay Bash, visiting Virginia Wesleyan in Virginia Beach Saturday for two games and then Christopher Newport in Newport News for a twinbill on Sunday.

Saturday pitted the River Hawks against number-one-ranked Virginia Wesleyan as the Marlins won 13-1, then in the nightcap faced University of Rochester, who won by a 22-0 score. Sunday's action featured SU rematching Rochester in the morning, with UR winning by a more modest 9-5 margin. The River Hawks played host CNU in their late-afternoon finale, where the Captains won 10-0.

VIRGINIA WESLEYAN 13, SUSQUEHANNA 1 (FIVE INNINGS)
  • Susquehanna's lone run Saturday against Virginia Wesleyan came from an Isabella Suleski sacrifice fly in the fourth to make the score 8-1.
  • The River Hawks totaled three hits against the Marlins, one each from Maddy Devine, Stevie Shaak and Sydney Perez. Shaak's was a double.
  • Brooke Allen started the first two innings, allowing seven runs before Piper Wright took over from the third inning on.
ROCHESTER 22, SUSQUEHANNA 0 (FIVE INNINGS)
  • Rochester got out to a nine-run first innings and never looked back. They tacked on a pair of four-run innings in the second and fourth and a five-run third inning to account for their scoring on 13 hits.
  • Susquehanna again totaled three hits, two from Maddy Devine and one from Stevie Shaak.
  • Maura Savoca got the start before the ball was handed over to three more pitchers in Amanda Amerman, Riley Mullan and Piper Wright.
ROCHESTER 9, SUSQUEHANNA 5
  • Rochester picked up where they left off from Saturday's nightcap with one run apiece in the first and second inning to lead 2-0.
  • They tacked on another run in the fourth to lead 3-0 before the River Hawks got on the board on a Sydney Perez sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 3-1 in the bottom half.
  • Before Susquehanna could rally, Rochester took Susquehanna for six more runs to lead 9-1 going into the bottom of the seventh.
  • Susquehanna would not go down quietly, playing four runs courtesy of one-run RBIs from Elle Walasavage, Alyssa Mayorca, Julia LaRose and Stevie Shaak. Unfortunately the third out came before any more runs could be scored.
  • The River Hawks totaled eight hits, with Mayorca offering a double in the mix.
  • Brooke Allen again got the start, offering four strikeouts. Amanda Amerman and Riley Mullen also threw in the circle.
CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT 10, SUSQUEHANNA 0 (FIVE INNINGS)
  • The 17th-ranked Captains hit a pair of two-run home runs for an early 4-0 lead after two innings.
  • CNU broke the game open in the third with a four-run inning, then added two more in the fourth.
  • Piper Wright started for Susquehanna and threw the first 3.1 innings, registering four strikeouts. Brooke Allen came on in the fourth for the final two outs.
  • The River Hawks were held to three hits, one each from Maddy Devine, Sydney Perez and Elle Walasavage.
