CLEARWATER, FL - Susquehanna women's lacrosse jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on Roanoke Thursday morning, the first of a pair of two-goal leads they held on the Maroons in the first half. The game looked to be a good one going into halftime with both sides tied at 8-8, but Roanoke took control by outscoring the River Hawks 8-2 in the second half, including six unanswered goals in the third quarter, to take a 16-10 victory.
HOW IT WENT DOWN
- Sophia Trively and Abby Andrus each fired the game's first two scores to give Susquehanna a 2-0 lead. Andrus assisted the first goal, followed by Jessica Russo with the latter.
- Roanoke answered by scoring three straight goals to lead 3-2. This triggered a back-and-forth stretch over the course of late in the first quarter and the second quarter.
- Trively tied the game late in the first quarter, only for Roanoke's Maddie McDonald to give the Maroons a 4-3 lead after the first quarter.
- The Maroons tried to move in during the beginning of the second quarter as Eva Lennon scored on a McDonald assist to open the second quarter leading 5-3.
- Susquehanna went on a tear with four straight goals, backed by two from Andrus and one each from Jessica Russo and Kieran Spears to lead 7-5.
- Roanoke swung the game back in its favor with three straight to make it 8-7 with 3:45 left in the first half.
- Waverly Oake-Libow tied the game before halftime with an impressive free position score as the scoreboard read 8-8 at the half.
- The third quarter was all Maroons as the team totaled six goals in the third quarter, while keeping the River Hawks scoreless.
- Roanoke tacked on another score to start the fourth quarter to make it a 7-0 scoring run and a 15-8 lead.
- Andrus and Abby DiComes broke the River Hawks' drought with two straight to cut the lead to 15-10. The Maroons finished the day with a goal from Savannah Anderson for the game's final score.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Andrus finished with five points on four goals and one assist. Trively accounted for two goals with one assist in a three-point day, with Russo notching another three-point day with one goal and two assists.
- DiComes and Oake-Libow each had two points on one goal and one assist.
- Roanoke led 41-17 in shots and 26-9 in shots on goal.
- Susquehanna goalie Aerin O'Brien totaled 15 saves to keep the Maroons in check.
- The River Hawks pulled through on 3-of-7 free positions, while Roanoke managed just 1-of-9. Trively, Oake-Libow and Spears each had a FP goal for the River Hawks.
- Kimberly Nagengast and Spears each finished with five draw controls as Susquehanna totaled 12 on the day to Roanoke's 16.
