TOWSON, MD - Baseball's successful Spring Break trip to Florida had some rewards awaiting for them when they returned to campus as the Landmark Conference awarded
Michael Girardi and
Ben Gearhart as their Players of the Week.
Gearhart earned Pitcher of the Week honors after incredible games against Norwich and Northwestern. The sophomore threw 13 full innings in Florida, helping Susquehanna to respective 8-4 and 4-0 wins. Gearhart's performance consisted of pitching seven full innings on the mound against Northwestern, allowing only two hits. Gearhart sat four different batters down, striking out the batters. Gearhart continued to shine on the defensive side of the mound, picking off two runners on a pick off attempt to first base. Against Norwich, Gearhart worked six full innings on the mound, allowing only four hits. He finished his day against the Cadets with four strikeouts, helping Susquehanna clinch the game 8-5.
Girardi powered the River Hawks all week, batting .458 while going 11-for-24 at the plate, with seven RBI, five walks, and eight runs scored across six games to help Susquehanna go 5–1 on the week. Against Heidelberg and Penn State Behrend, he raked in three RBIs in both games, as well as one double against Heidelberg in the 8-5 victory. Against Behrend trailing 5-4 in the ninth inning, Girardi flipped the River Hawks' fortunes with one swing of the bat, a two-run single as Suquehanna used a six-run ninth inning to take a 9-5 win.
The River Hawks jump back into at Franklin and Marshall College on Wednesday. March 11 at Penn Medicine Park. SU makes its home and Landmark Conference season debut this weekend when they welcome Wilkes to Bollinger Field for a three-game series, two on Saturday starting at noon and the one remaining Sunday at noon, as well.
