Jones Reaches 300 Career Strikeouts in Winning Pitching Performance at Drew

MADISON, NJ - Susquehanna softball split their double header against conference foe Drew University on Saturday. The River Hawks took game one decisively 4-1, but the Rangers flipped the score around in the nightcap to split the doubleheader. Game one was highlighted by pitcher Brianna Jones recording seven strikeouts on her way to 300 career K's, becoming the sixth Susquehanna pitcher ever to do so.

GAME ONE: SUSQUEHANNA 4, DREW 1
  • The Rangers's lone run in the contest came in the very first inning off an error from the River Hawks defense, with Drew not scoring another run in the next six innings.
  • The River Hawks quickly answered back in the top of the second inning when Amanda Amerman was able to cross home plate on an error from Drew to tie the game at one run apiece. Susquehanna tacked on another run in the top of the fourth after Amerman crossed home plate again after an RBI single from Alyssa Mayorca.
  • With the River Hawks now up 2-1, the defense continued to keep Drew off the scoreboard. Brianna Jones pitched all seven innings for the River Hawks while striking out seven batters and only allowing six hits. Needing four strikeouts to reach 300, she reached it in the bottom of the fourth against her first batter. Jones proceeded to strike out the side in the fourth.
  • After a quiet fifth and sixth inning, Susquehanna earned insurance runs in the top of the seventh after Katelyn Dugery's two run RBI single gave the River Hawks the 4-1. Drew was unable to score a run in the bottom of the seventh, securing the Susquehanna win.
  • Mayorca led the River Hawks in the hitting column in game one, going 3-4 with a RBI. Amerman and Dugery each recorded two hits, while Jones and Shaak each earned one hit.
  • Jones' seven strikeouts were the only K's of the game as no River Hawk went down on strikes. They did reach base on balls three times, including Maddy Devine walking twice.

GAME TWO: DREW 4, SUSQUEHANNA 1
  • After a scoreless two innings, Elle Walasavage scored the first run of the game in the bottom of third, starting with a lead off single and then coming home after a ground out from Maddy Devine.
  • Drew immediately answered back in the bottom half of the frame with three runs on back-to-back-to-back plays after the River Hawks allowed three hits in the inning. The Rangers scored another run in the bottom of the fourth after a RBI single to give themselves a 4-1 advantage.
  • Coming off a successful game one in the batters box, Susquehanna continued that in game two but was unable to bring the runners on base back home. The River Hawks finished with seven hits in the game and left five of their runners on base in the nightcap.
  • Both teams remained at a standstill through the seventh inning, giving Drew the game two win.
  • Jones was the only River Hawk to record multiple hits in game two with two hits, while Devine, Dugery, Walasavage, Savannah Patrone and Sydney Perez each earned a single hit.

UP NEXT FOR THE RIVER HAWKS
  • Susquehanna will be back in action on Wednesday, April 15 when they travel to Huntingdon, Pa. for a Landmark Conference doubleheader against Juniata starting at 3 p.m.
