Softball Splits with Blue Jays in Pair of Close Contests

SELINSGROVE, PA - Susquehanna softball split their Landmark Conference doubleheader against Elizabethtown on Saturday. The River Hawks earned a 3-1 win in game one, followed by a 5-4 loss to the Blue Jays in the nightcap.
 
GAME ONE: SUSQUEHANNA 3, ELIZABETHTOWN 1
  • The River Hawks kicked off the scoring in the bottom of the second with Alyssa Mayorca crossing home plate on an error from the Blue Jays. The River Hawks scored eight total hits in game one, and three of them came in the bottom of the second.
  • With Brianna Jones starting on the mound, the River Hawks only gave up a single run through seven innings, which came in the top of the third after Mayorca's run. The River Hawks only gave up five hits in game one, and committed no errors.
  • The River Hawks answered back in the bottom of the third when Maura Savoca scored off a Riley Mullen second base steal to give the River Hawks back the lead. Susquehanna gained the third and final run of the game in the very next inning after a Jones RBI single to right field.
  • Jones' dominant day at the plate and in the circle gave her the win as the pitcher, boasting her record to 5-2. Jones finished her day with five hits and one run allowed, while striking out seven batter and only walking three batters.
  • Katelyn Dugery had a hat-trick performance at the plate going 3-3, while five other River Hawks recorded a hit for Susquehanna
 
GAME TWO: ELIZABETHTOWN 5, SUSQUEHANNA 4
  • The nightcap began with no runs scored through the first three innings for both teams, until the Blue Jays changed that with two runs in the top of the fourth inning.
  • Mayorca helped Susquehanna respond with a RBI single to right field, followed by a Isabella Sulesky two-RBI single to left field to give the River Hawks a 3-2 lead.
  • Elizabethtown came back in the top of the fifth inning with three more runs scored in the inning to take back the lead. The River Hawks would only score a single run in the final three innings, which came in the bottom of the sixth off another Sulesky RBI single. Elizabethtown went on to secure the 5-4 win.
  • In the bottom of the sixth Susquehanna appeared to have a chance to tie the game, with runners on second and third, a wild pitch saw Mayorca sprint home, but was tagged out at home on a close play. 
  • Susquehanna and Elizabethtown totaled 22 hits in the nightcap, with the Blue Jays gaining the advantage in the hits column with 13 hits to Susquehanna nine. Sulezky, Dugery, and Sydeney Perez recorded two hits each for the River Hawks in game two.
 
UP NEXT FOR THE RIVER HAWKS
  • The River Hawks will take on a non-conference opponent for the first time in almost a month when they travel to Stevenson, MD to take on Stevenson University on Tuesday, April 21. The non-conference double header has a game one scheduled start time of 3 p.m.
