SELINSGROVE, Pa. – After a two-week layoff, the Susquehanna University women's soccer team resumed their match Monday night against Misericordia. The match originally intended as both teams' season openers was cut short nearly 15 minutes in due to lightning on Sept. 1 with the Cougars holding a 1-0 lead. When things picked up Monday, Misericordia maintained its lead and added a second score in the second half to take the extended 2-0 win.
Misericordia opened the scoring just 3:58 into the contest back on Sept. 1 when Saydi Renzo found the back of the net off an assist from Caelan Gallagher. The River Hawks' defense settled in from there, with goalkeeper
Katie Henchy making a pair of saves during the opening half to keep Susquehanna within one at the break.
Susquehanna came out aggressively to begin the second half, recording three shots in the opening nine minutes.
Amelia Kopp tested the Misericordia goalkeeper with a shot in the 54th minute, but the Cougars' Marisa Patrissi made the save.
Misericordia doubled its advantage in the 66th minute when Julia Hayward scored off an assist from Alyssa Steenback.
The River Hawks continued to push offensively late in the match. Kopp registered two more shots in the final eight minutes, while
Ava Billmeyer put two shots on goal in the closing minutes, but Patrissi turned both away to preserve the shutout.
