Swimming and Diving Teams Ready for 2021-22 Season

SELINSGROVE, PA - The Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving will begin their seasons this Friday, October 22nd  in the SU Relay meet in the Garrett Complex Natatorium, as each team will return from a year in which they did not compete, hungry for a chance at a Landmark Conference title. Mike Tubb will lead both squads, as the coach begins his third season at the helm of the Susquehanna Swimming and Diving Teams.

Men's Swimming and Diving

The Susquehanna University Men's Swimming and Diving team is coming off of their third straight second-place finish in the Landmark Conference Championships, back in the 2019-20 season. Despite the near two-year gap in competition, the team returns a strong group that will look to build on their recent string of success, and challenge the five-time defending champs in Catholic University.

Returning to lead the River Hawks is senior Captain, Eric Towse, who races in the backstroke and individual medley. The reigning Landmark Champion in the 100 backstroke and 200 backstroke holds school records in those two events and will look to defend his titles this season. The senior also is a part of the record holding relay teams in the 400 freestyle and 400 medley. Jayden Corrigan also returns and will look to build upon a season that saw him make the All-Landmark Second Team in the 500 freestyle and the 400 individual medley. Corrigan is also second all-time in the 500 freestyle while also ranking in the Susquehanna Top 10 in the 1000 freestyle, 400 IM, and 200 butterfly.

Andre Fissella begins his junior season this year for the River Hawks as well, looking to build upon his first year in each which he helped set school records in the 400 freestyle relay and the 400 medley relay. He holds the fourth-best time ever in the 100 butterfly at Susquehanna and he also ranks in the SU record books in the 200 IM. Sophomore Brendan Alvino and first-year Caleb Leaman will be counted upon to be regular contributors in their events, as Alvino will compete in sprints and fly events, while Leaman should be a great addition to the diving squad.

Women's Swimming and Diving

The Susquehanna University Women's Swimming and Diving team will look to build off a third-place finish in the 2020 Landmark Conference Championship after winning the nine previous conference championships. They will look to dethrone Catholic University who has now won the last two championships after competing in 2021.

The team will return two important junior swimmers in Haley Muth and Julia Adams during the second semester of the 2021-22 season. Both students are currently abroad but will return in the spring for the main slate of the schedule. Muth was an All-Landmark Second Team member in the 50 freestyle in 2020, while also finishing in third place in the 200 freestyle, 200 medley relay, and the 400 medley relay. Her 50 freestyle time is the second-fastest in SU history, and she ranks in the record books in the 100 freestyle, 100 and 200 breaststroke, 200 IM, and the 100 butterfly. Adams finished third in the 2020 Conference Championships in the 200 medley relay and holds a spot in the Top 10 in the SU record books for the 50 freestyle.

Sophomores Mia Doll and Amy Segond will be counted on in their first full seasons to help the team, as Doll will swim in the individual medley and mid-distance freestyle events, and Segond will swim in the butterfly and sprint freestyle events for SU. First-year Julia Romano will be counted on to make an impact on the diving team during his first season as a River Hawk.

Each team will look to overcome students abroad and finishing up seasons in other sports during the beginning of the 21-22 season. The men's team currently has two men abroad and the women's team has six team members overseas, with each returning in the Spring semester. Three women are currently finishing up their fall seasons in soccer and field hockey, and will join the team once those seasons conclude.

Some important meets to look forward to during the season include the team's first Landmark match against Drew University, which will be a good first test for each team. The meets against Franklin and Marshall and Scranton in back-to-back weeks will give each team, with all of their players back from trips abroad, a great test in the month leading up to the Landmark Conference Championships.
