River Hawks Dominating Heptathlon After Day 1 At Susquehanna Early Season Multi

SELINSGROVE, PA (December 9, 2022) -- Junior Joey Masser led a contingent of five River Hawk competitors leading the heptathlon Friday evening in the opening day at the Susquehanna Early Season Multi & Invitational from Garrett Sports Complex. 

After the first four events, Masser was 236 points ahead of teammate Brandon Zimmerman for the lead, while sophomore Benjamin Bulger, senior Isaiah Blatt and first-year Rowan Smith rounded out the top five. Bulger posted 2370 points, Blatt was right behind him with 2297 points and Smith posted 2260 points through the first four events. 

The night started with a record as Zimmerman posted a heptathlon 60 meter dash facility record with a time of 7.09 seconds for 851 points. Masser was just behind him in second place with a time of 7.17 seconds, and Blatt was third with a 7.32. Bulger ran a personal-best time of 7.45 seconds, and Smith was sixth with a time of 7.46. 

In the long jump, Zimmerman won the event with a 6.73 meter leap on his first attempt while Masser used his third jump to post a distance of 6.72 for second place. Bulger tallied a personal-best mark of 6.25 meters for third place, and Blatt was fourth after flying 6.11 meters on his third jump. Smith was sixth with a 5.60 meter leap, and sophomore Ethan Rose was seventh after registering a 5.57 meter mark. 

The shot put saw Masser tally a personal-best distance of 12.55 meters for the victory, while Zimmerman was third overall in the event with a throw of 9.43 meters. Bulger came in fourth with a throw of 9.08 meters, while Blatt and Smith were fifth and six respectively with throws of 8.89 and 8.37 meters. 

The final event of Friday evening was the high jump, and Susquehanna saw some big performances. Masser won the event with a height of 1.88 meters, and Smith was third after clearing a lifetime-best  height of 1.82 meters. Zimmerman also registered a personal-best in the high jump of 1.82 meters, and Bulger cleared a mark of 1.73 meters for fifth place and 569 points. 

Competition will continue at the Susquehanna Early Season Invitational & Multi Saturday morning at 10 am in the Garrett Sports Complex Field House.
