SELINSGROVE, PA (February 26, 2022) -- The Susquehanna University men's indoor track and field squad pulled away from the rest of the conference Saturday in James Garrett Sports Complex thanks to its depth, earning its second all-time Landmark Conference Indoor Track and Field title as it nearly earned 200 points for the day.
Susquehanna was 83 points clear of second-place Elizabethtown College, picking up 189 points for the meet to cruise to the victory. The River Hawk coaching staff, led by
Ethan Senecal, earned Landmark Conference Coaching Staff of the Year while SU swept the individual awards.
Ian Dyson was named as the Track Athlete of the Meet, while
Joey Masser picked up Field Athlete of the Meet. Newcomer
Brandon Zimmerman was tabbed as the Landmark Rookie of the Meet.
The River Hawks started the afternoon with six points in the distance medley, as Josh Kimotho, TJ Grenda,
Jake Newell and
Shane Urban finished third with a time of 11:13.27. In the 4x200 relay, the River Hawks picked up their first win of the day, as
Ian Dyson,
Ezra Miller, Isiah Blatt and Matthew Masser ran a 1:34.74 for 10 points.
In the mile run,
Jack Warehime picked up two points with a 4:26.79, while SU dominated the 60 hurdle finals as
Joey Masser earned the win with a time of 8.67. Ben Bulger was third with a time of 8.79, while Matthew Masser was fourth after running a 9.04. Miller was fifth with a 9.05, and Blatt earned sixth after posting a 9.06. In all, the 60 hurdles handed SU 23 points in all.
In the 400 meter dash, Zimmerman was second after posting a personal-best time of 22.81 while
Elliott Davis was right behind him in third place with a time of 51.83. In the 60 yard dash, Dyson earned the conference title with a 7.047, winning by .003 seconds with a personal-best time. Zimmerman ran a personal-best 7.06 in the prelims, and took sixth in the finals with a 7.71.
The 200 meter dash was the River Hawks go 1-2-3, as Zimmerman ran a personal-best time of 22.81, edging Dyson by 0.01 seconds for the conference title. Davis was third with a 23.17 as well for Susquehanna, as the River Hawks picked up 24 points in the event.
The finale of the track events was the 4x400 relay and SU put an exclamation point on the meet, winning the relay with a time of 3:30.14 thanks to the efforts of
Kareem Beck, Miller, Zimmerman and Davis.
Susquehanna was strong in the field events as well Saturday, as the River Hawks went 2-3 in the pole vault as
Keefer Goodspeed took second with a mark of 4.40 meters and Blatt was third after clearing 4.40 meters as well. In the high jump,
Bryce Ellinger set a new Landmark Championships record while tying his personal-best height with a mark of 2.06 meters.
Joey Masser was second in the high jump after getting over 1.89 meters.
Masser was back on top of the podium in the long jump, as he earned a personal-best mark of 7.01 meters to take the victory. Masser's distance was just short of the school record in the event. Zimmerman was second in the long jump, as he also tallied a mark of 6.85 meters, while Keith Green was fifth after leaping to a mark of 6.22 meters.
The triple jump saw
Joey Masser pick up another victory, as he launched to a personal-best distance of 13.75 meters for the first-place finish. Green was third in the triple with a distance of 13.18 meters, while Bulger was fourth after registering a mark of 12.88 meters.
The throwing events saw SU take 4-5-6-7 in the shot put, as
Anthony Taddeo finished fourth with a distance of 12.45 meters. Sophomore Ryan MacDonald was right behind him in fifth place with a toss of 12.24 meters, while fellow sophomore Tyler Hawk took sixth with a throw of 12.17 meters. First-year
Alex Albrecht finished seventh after logging a mark of 12.12 meters.
The weight throw saw MacDonald earn fourth place with a personal-best toss of 14.31 meters, while Taddeo and Hauk finished fifth and sixth respectively with distances of 14.27 meters and 13.36 meters.
The Landmark Conference title was the second in program history, stopping an 11-year run by Moravian University. Susquehanna's first title was back in 2008-09. It was only the second time in conference history that Moravian has not captured the Landmark title in indoor track and field.
