Masser Wins Heptathlon To Highlight Day Two For Men's Track At AARTFC Championships

ROCHESTER, NY (March 5, 2022) -- Sophomore Joey Masser continued his very strong season with another great performance, winning the heptathlon to highlight the second and final day of competition at the 2022 AARTFC Indoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Nazareth College at the Golisano Training Center in Rochester, NY. 

Masser led coming into the day, but built on his lead to pull away for the victory while breaking his personal-best point total with 4553. Masser earned the victory to start the morning in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.57, and followed that up with a mark of 3.23 in the pole vault for fourth place. In the final event, Masser recorded a time of 3:06.77 in the 1000 meters to clain the victory over Thomas Rich of Carnegie Mellon University and his 4359 points. 

Masser wasn't the only person that was competing in the multi-event competition for SU, as Isaiah Blatt also set a new personal-best point record with 4212 points to finish fourth overall. Blatt was third in the 60m hurdles with a time of 9.11, and easily won the pole vault with a mark of 4.33 meters. Blatt would cross the finish line in the 1000 meter run in 3:08.89 to secure the fourth-place finish. 

That wasn't the stop of the strong showings from Susquehanna Saturday, as junior Bryce Ellinger took second place in the high jump after clearing 2.06 meters. 

First-year Elliott Davis finished 13th in the 400 meter dash after running a personal-best time of 50.77, and Brandon Zimmerman was 13th in the long jump after recording a pair of marks at 6.43 meters.

  • At the moment, Bryce Ellinger ranks No. 8 in the nation in high jump and looks strong for a possible bid to the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships next weekend in Greensboro, NC. Joey Masser is currently 30th in the country in the long jump, and 22nd in the heptathlon and also could be in the mix for a possible trip the the national stage. For the rest of the River Hawks, the indoor season has come to a close and the track and field team will reconvene in two weeks for the start of the outdoor track and field season. The River Hawks will head to the Washington & Lee University Carnival in Lexington, VA March 18-19.
