Box Score SELINSGROVE, PA (April 16, 2022) -- The Susquehanna University women's lacrosse team had a chance to tie the game with five seconds left, but a potential game-tying shot went just high as the River Hawks dropped a 16-15 Landmark Conference decision to Moravian University Saturday on Senior Day.
Prior to the game, Susquehanna honored its three seniors in
Bella Ferriso,
Caroline Chase and
Katie Hoerman for Senior Day on it's final home game of the 2022 regular season. It was an exciting back-and-forth contest, living up the billing with two evenly matched teams.
The River Hawks (8-6, 1-3 Landmark) trailed 13-10 after 45 minutes of action, but a
Caroline Chase woman-up goal less than 30 seconds into the fourth quarter made it 13-11. Following a Moravian tally, unassisted goals from
Heather Riefenhauser and
Allie Kutler made it 14-13.
Lindsey Strohl scored back-to-back goals to make it 16-13 but the River Hawks didn't give up. Chase netted her 40th goal of the year with 4:10 to play to pull SU closer, and first-year
Liv Owen pulled Susquehanna to within one with 1:15 left off a nice feed from sophomore
Kelsey Homberg.
Susquehanna won the ensuing draw, but a shot from
Hannah McNamara with 28 seconds left was stopped. Moravian picked up the ground ball, but turned it over with 15 seconds to play. On the restart, Chase rolled to the crease and had a solid look but the attempt whizzed just high of the crossbar as time expired.
It was a tight game all contest through the opening half, nas no team led by more than two goals. The lead switched hands four times, as the River Hawks largest lead of the game came at 5-3 after Homberg's 30th of teh year at 13:46 of the second quarter.
Moravian rattled off four of the next five goals in the second quarter, taking a 9-7 lead into the halftime break. The Greyhounds (7-6, 4-0 Landmark) pushed its lead up to 11-8, but
Caitlin Harvey and Riefenhauser scored to once again trim MU's lead to one. Eliza Fantazzi scored consecutively just before the end of the third quarter to set up the exciting finish.
Chase tallied a team-high seven points on four goals and three assists, getting to within one point of 100 for the season. The 99 points for the season broke the school record for points in a year, besting the mark set by Emma Ehler back in 2013.
Riefenhauser tallied four goals, while Homberg added two goals and an assist in addition to two caused turnovers.
Hannah McNamara finished with a goal and assist, causing a team-high three turnovers to go with three ground balls. Sophomore defender
Liz Hordesky finished with two ground balls and two caused turnovers, and
Emmy Regan posted seven saves and three ground balls.
Allie Kutler also added 10 draw controls
