Men's Tennis Competes At King's Invitational

WILKES-BARRE, PA (September 24, 2022) -- The Susquehanna University men's tennis team competed in Day 1 of the 2022 King's Invitational, hosted at Kirby Park in Wilkes-Barre. The tournament features multiple flights in both singles and doubles action, and many SU players advanced to the finals in both. 

In singles play, Joshua Sanderson was the No. 2 seed in No. 1 singles play and earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory in his quarterfinal match against Jon Carasso of FDU-Florham. He will take on Paul Longbein of Penn College in the semifinals Sunday afternoon. At No. 2 singles, Tim Basta was the No. 9 seed but he picked up a 6-3, 6-3 win over Luke Leach of Lycoming in the opening round. He then followed that up with a 6-3, 7-6 (4) win over top seed Kyle Shuler of Penn College to move into the semifinals against Weston Goodwin of Manhattanville College. 

At No. 3 singles, John Duncan defeated Jason Bundys of the University of Scranton 6-1, 1-6, 1-0 (10-6) and will battle Nick Harth from King's College in the semifinal round Sunday. Thomas Hallahan cruised to a win at No. 4 singles in his first match of the day against Lee Conlu of Arcadia University, earning a 6-2, 6-0 win. Hallahan will now play Kevin Liwag of FDU-Florham Sunday in the quarterfinals. 

Conor Ryan moved into the semifinals of the No. 6 singles flight thanks to a 6-1, 6-0 win over David Cassell. 

In doubles play, Duncan and Sanderson won an 8-5 decision over King's, followed by an 8-4 win against FDU to move into the final against Scranton. In the No. 1 final, Scranton outlasted the Susquehanna duo 8-2. At No. 2 doubles, Basta and Ryan earned an 8-2 win over Arcadia, and then topped Scranton 8-4 to move into the final. Once there, the pair became SU's only bracket champions with an 8-6 win over Manhattanville. 

At No. 3 doubles, Hallahan and Ream earned an 8-0 win over Arcadia before falling to Manhattanville 8-6. Sam Sidle and Brendan Stockdale fell in the No. 4 doubles final to Manhattanville as well.
