Box Score GENEVA, NY - Susquehanna field hockey fell in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament in 2023 at the hands of William Smith College on Wednesday night, losing 1-0 in overtime. They conceded their goal after 12 saves from
Ashley Derrick.
Both sides defended superbly throughout, including both goalkeepers being called on time and time again, with Derrick making 12 saves and the Herons' goalkeeper making 10 over the 61 minutes of play.
It was a slow start for both teams, with William Smith having the game's only shot after one period. The floodgates would open, however, in the second quarter, with the Herons having nine shots in the second frame with the River Hawks having four of their own. SUFH managed nine shots in the second half, all coming in the fourth quarter, while the hosts had 10 in the second half-hour. The hosts also had the only three shots of overtime to win the overall shot battle 23-13, including 14 shots on target to the River Hawks' 10.
The River Hawks had nine penalty corners to the Herons' eight, including eight in the fourth quarter as they built up pressure but were ultimately unable to break the deadlock late on.
Lydia Hidlay took all nine for Susquehanna.
Captain
Katie Bucher led the way for the River Hawks with five shots, including four on target.
Kari Schmidt and
Lexi Fumanti also added two each, and Schmidt contributed with the game's lone defensive save.
The River Hawks complete their remarkable season at 15-6, winning the Landmark Conference while having four players selected to the All-Conference team and winning three of the four conference awards. Head coach
Allison Fordyce and her squad will now look ahead to 2024, where SUFH will attempt to defend its second-ever Landmark Conference title.
