SELINSGROVE, PA (April 7, 2023) – Joey Masser broke his own school decathlon on his way to a second-place finish on the second and final day of Susquehanna's Multi with 6,255 points. Entering Friday in second place with 3,535 points, Masser took the top time in the 110-meter hurdles at 14.60, followed by top-five finishes in the pole vault and javelin to beat his previous school standard of 6,003 points set in 2021, while posting the second-highest point total in NCAA Division III this season.
Masser trailed only Carnegie Mellon's Thomas Rich, who posted 6,556 points. He cleared the pole vault at 3.45m to finish fourth, followed by throwing the fifth-best mark in the javelin at 43.22m. He ran 53.60 in the 400 meters and 5:14.31 in the 1500 meters to close things out.
Benjamin Bulger finished fifth with 5,733 points. He opened his day with a personal-best 15.35 in the 110-meter hurdles for third-best in the event, while finishing with the sixth-highest mark in the pole vault at 3.15m. In the throwing events he took 24.45m in the discus and 39.58m in the javelin, followed by closing out the day with a 4:58.83 time in the 1500m.
Rowan Smith placed seventh in his decathlon debut with 5,491 points. He finished with the sixth-best time in the 110-meter hurdles at a personal-best 16.19, 25.42m in the discus, 2.95m in the pole vault (personal best), 38.36m in the javelin (personal best), and 5:06.46 in the 1500 meters.
Newcomer
Ethan Roe finished 16th with 3,918 points. He ran 20.68 in the 110H, 19.71m in the discus, 2.75m in the pole vault, 31.80m in the javelin, and a new personal-best 5:21.34 in the 1500 meters.
The River Hawks team will have their opportunities to shine also Saturday for the Susquehanna Invitational, beginning at 9:00 A.M.
