SELINSGROVE, PA - A resilient Elizabethtown team gave the Susquehanna field hockey team plenty of challenges throughout a hot October Saturday at Sassafras Field. The River Hawks held a pair of one-goal leads, which were matched each time by Blue Jays goals, leading to a 2-2 tie in the final moments. All that changed when Susquehanna was given a penalty corner chance with 4.8 seconds to play. Inserted by
Hannah Garlin,
Emma Campitelli fired a laser to the back of the cage as time expired to give the River Hawks a walkoff win and even their Landmark record to 1-1.
HOW IT WENT DOWN
- Taylor Rothermel scored the first two goals for Susquehanna. She started things off with a goal just under five minutes into the game, assisted by Mady Quigley.
- Despite a 13-4 lead in shots for Susquehanna in the first half, one goal was all they could offer in the first 30 minutes. In the waning seconds of the first half, Elizabethtown executed a penalty corner that Drew Bridges punched through to tie the game 1-1 at halftime.
- Rothermel returned to her scoring ways to give Susquehanna a 2-1 lead late in the third quarter, assisted by Kiara Koeller.
- The Blue Jays exacted revenge once more nearly two minutes later as Meadow Keet used a fastbreak opportunity to tie it again on an assist from Sara Watson.
- The shooting went down in the fourth quarter, with the River Hawks tallying two shots in the frame to E-Town's none.
- As overtime preparations were being made, Susquehanna started to find life down by Elizabethtown's goal. Several opportunities came and went, but one last charge offered the River Hawks a penalty corner with 4.8 seconds to play. With Garlin inserting, Emma Campitelli was waiting at the top of the box. She sent a shot airborne with roughly two seconds left that whizzed past everyone and everything, except the back of the cage as time expired for the win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
