SELINSGROVE, PA - Mario Castro Sanchez poured in a career-high 25 points on Wednesday night against visiting Wilkes University, leading Susquehanna Men's Basketball to a Landmark win, 75-72, to run its conference record to 2-1 and 5-2 overall.
HOW IT WENT DOWN
- Castro Sanchez's 25 points came on 7-of-11 shooting from the field, with 12 of the 25 coming from three pointers. The junior guard added four rebounds and four assists to his career night—one that propels the River Hawks to a 5-2 overall record.
- Despite prevailing over the Colonels, the River Hawks didn't hold a lead until right around 10-minutes in, when Jackson Van Wagener drained a corner three to give Susquehanna its first lead at the 10:26 mark of the first half. Van Wagener finished the game with seven points, adding three rebounds and four assists to his final mark.
- One minute later, first-year KJ Carson followed up Van Wagener's lead-taking three pointer with two of his own, extending Susquehanna's lead to nearly double digits. Carson played a season-high 18 minutes and 10 points on 60% shooting from beyond the arc.
- Castro Sanchez finished the half following Carson's two made three pointers with nine points of his own, leading the River Hawks to a 43-33 lead at halftime.
- The lead held as much of the same through the second-half's first ten minutes. Five points scored by Alex Katusha alongside four from Audric Washington helped Susquehanna keep it around a double-digit game.
- The Colonels would get the lead down all the way to just two points at the 4:19 mark in the game, but a three-pointer and three made free throws by Castro Sanchez would help fight off a late push.
- Trailing by three and holding last possession, Wilkes made one last ditch effort inbounding from under the rim. A good look by Lucas Lesko from the left wing rimmed out as time expired.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The River Hawks continued to rely heavily on three-point shooting, hitting 10 triples to Wilkes' three. They also shot 35.7% from beyond the arc at 10-of-28, nearly double of what the Colonels would finish the game with as the visitors dropped just
- 22 of Susquehanna's 75 points came from their bench. Carson's 10 points alongside eight from AJ Lomax gave them what they needed en route to the win.
