Box Score SELINSGROVE, PA - The Landmark Tournament bound Susquehanna men's tennis team nearly pulled out a win against Scranton Saturday on Senior Day. The doubles point was swayed by two tiebreaking runoffs at one and two doubles in the Royals' favor, then the visitors got by with a pair of three-set win at singles to push them over the edge in a 4-3 victory.
The River Hawks' two seniors, Thomas Hallahan and Eli Markle, celebrated their big day with Susquehanna's lone win in the doubles competition at three, knocking off Nathan Harrison and Christopher Martinez 6-1. Scranton, however, got the point with 7-6 victories at one and two doubles, with Nathan Bassett and Owen Miller dropping their number-two match against Harrison Clark and Ethan Borick 7-6 (0), while the one team of Logan Rauschenberger and Tyler Hester were narrowly defeated by Maxwell Dombrowski and Lucas Kotcho, 7-6 (5).
Susquehanna rallied with singles wins from Miller at three singles against Borick 6-2 and 6-3, Austin Imhoof at five singles against Nathan Harrison 6-0 and 6-1, and Daniel Murphy at six versus Martinez 6-1 and 6-0. The Royals got just one singles win in straight sets as Lucas Kotcho defeated Hallahan at two singles 6-4 and 6-0. They needed to win the remaining two matches via three sets, which they did as Dombrowski beat Rauschenberger at the one spot, 7-5, 2-6, 6-1. It came down to four singles, where Hester prevailed in his first set against Clark 6-3, only for the guy from Scranton to take the last two frames by matching 6-4 scores.
While the River Hawks top out the regular season at 9-5 overall and 4-5 in the Landmark, they earned the fifth seed for the Landmark Conference Tournament. They'll travel to fourth-seeded Moravian on Tuesday starting at 4 p.m. The Greyhounds hold a 6-3 league record and 12-7 overall mark, beating Susquehanna in the regular season 6-1 back on Mar. 22.
