SELINSGROVE, PA - Susquehanna swept the Landmark Conference Tennis Athletes of the Week in first-year
Nanci Major on the women's side and sophomore
Nathan Bassett for the men. Both played crucial roles by winning their singles and doubles matches to defeat Elizabethtown on Saturday.
With the assistance of
Mackenzie Romig, Major defeated the Blue Jays' one doubles team, 7-6 (5), to earn her first career collegiate win. Major continued her dominance on the court, defeating Katie Balzano in three sets in the three singles match. Major won the first set, 7-5, before defeating her opponent by the same score in the third and final set. Major's athlete-of-the-week performance helped guide the River Hawks to a 4-2 victory, evening their Landmark record to 1-1.
Bassett's performance on the court helped the River Hawks secure a crucial 4-3 victory, advancing to 1-1 in conference play. Bassett and
Austin Imhoof defeated the Blue Jays three doubles team by a 6-4 score. Bassett continued his dominance on the court in the five singles match, defeating Elizabethtown's Ryan Kraychik 6-0 in the first set, and 6-1 in the second set. The sophomore's wins were crucial as the only River Hawk on the day who won both his doubles and singles matches.
Major, Bassett, and the River Hawks are back in action on October 4, as they host the Pacers of Marywood University, beginning at 1 p.m. They have two more matches this fall, welcoming Misericordia Saturday, Oct. 11 and Penn College Sunday, Oct. 12.
