DALLAS, Pa. – Apparently the Susquehanna women's soccer team wanted to enjoy a rare break in the rain that pounded central Pennsylvania this week as the Crusaders took Misericordia to double overtime before ultimately prevailing 2-1 on Marissa DeParto's (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Indian Hills) game winner.
SU (2-1) was actually out-shot 11-6 by the Cougars (1-2) but goalie Rachel Norbuts (Monroeville, N.J./Woodstown) racked up four saves and surrendered just one goal to help keep her squad in the game.
DeParto led all players with four shots, the lone Susquehanna player to take more than one shot, and her game winner marked her third goal of the young season. She also chipped in an assist on the Crusaders' first goal of the game for a three-point afternoon.
After 18:03 of action, Laura Buriak (Salem, Va./Salem) gave SU a 1-0 edge on a header that went off Misericordia keeper Jess Anderson.
The Crusaders held on to that one-goal edge until early in the second half when the Cougars' Sam Helmstetter netted the equalizer at the 47:12 mark.
With 2:25 left in regulation, DeParto had a chance to put Susquehanna ahead but her shot hit the crossbar and Helmstetter's shot with two seconds left sailed high to force overtime.
The first overtime passed without a real scoring threat from either team before DeParto came through with her clutch goal after nearly 117 minutes of play to hand SU its second victory of the fall.
SU plays its first home game of the season on Thursday with a 6 p.m. game against PSU-Altoona.
