WAYNESBORO, PA - The Susquehanna men's golf team headed out to Waynesboro Country Club Saturday and Sunday for its biggest tournament to date this season competing in the 19-team Mason-Dixon Classic, hosted by Gettysburg College and McDaniel College. The River Hawks, after combining for a 335 (+47) score on Saturday, improved by ten strokes on the second day of competition Sunday with a 325 (+37). Leading the way was sophomore
David Birmingham, who scored a pair of 81's to place tied for 74th in the crowded individual field. He combined for five birdies, including three on Saturday.
Perhaps the biggest improvement of the weekend between all teams belonged to first-year
Chase Maggs. After shooting a less-than-stellar 89 that didn't count towards the team's day one scoring, he turned it around on day two for a 15-stroke improvement with a team-best 74 for a 163, finishing one stroke behind Birmingham. He did so by way of four birdies on day two and making par on eight holes.
Charlie Betz also turned in a 163, scoring an 81 on day one with two birdies and an 82 on Sunday.
Jonathan Spohn finished the weekend with a 174, scoring an 84 Saturday and a 90 Sunday with 11 pars, while
Eli Mumau shot a 178, backed by a 90 on Saturday and an 88 on Sunday, combining for 12 pars and one birdie.Â
The weekend at Waynesboro triggers a busy stretch for the River Hawks, who are back out on the road this Tuesday for a date at the Alvernia Invitational from LedgeRock Country Club. Then on Thursday the team is up the road in Danville for the Bloomsburg University Invitational on the Golf Course at Frosty Valley. Finally this Satrurday Susquehanna goes out with the women to Altoona to face Penn State Altoona and Hood for a tri-match at the Sinking Valley Country Club.Â
