HUMMELS WHARF, PA - The Susquehanna University men's golf team got their first victory of the 2024-25 season Sunday afternoon in their first home match of the year, defeating Juniata in Landmark Conference play by a 312-318 score. The victory also marks the first for new head coach Ryan Redfern '11, a former golfer for Susquehanna who helped produced some of the program's conference championships.
The five River Hawks responsible for the win were
Charlie Betz,
Jonathan Spohn,
David Birmingham,
Eli Mumau, and newcomer
Chase Maggs. While Juniata boasted a talented roster that included two Eagles shooting sub-80, Susquehanna countered with Betz, Spohn, and Birmingham each shooting below 80, including Betz and Birmingham carrying eagles on the par-five 17th hole. Spohn tied with JC's Isaak Bloom to top the leaderboard with a 75 on the Susquehanna Valley Country Club course, collecting three birdies and seven pars. Birmingham was third on the board with a 78, adding one birdie to go with his eagle and seven pars. Betz, meanwhile, added eight pars to hang next to his eagle for a 79 on the day for fourth overall. Mumau shot an 80 by way of one birdie on 17 and nine pars, while Maggs finished strong with an 85 picking up two birdies on the back nine and four pars. Despite their name being the Eagles, Juniata did not carry such a score on their cards, but totaled three birdies on the afternoon between two from Colin Wible, who finished with an 81, and one from the team-leading Bloom. JC's Ian Kannett was their one other sub-80 shooter with a 79, managing par on all but five holes.
The River Hawks' next test is back out on the invitational circuit, traveling to the Waynesboro Country Club for the Mason-Dixon Classic Oct. 5-6, hosted by Gettysburg College and McDaniel College.
