Alderfer Sets Career-Defining Pentathlon Mark at NCAA Champs

ROCHESTER, NY - Susquehanna pentathlete Hannah Alderfer and 60-meter hurdler Chloe Yoder took the national stage Friday at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships at Nazareth University. For the seniors, it marked Yoder's third nationals appearance under the roof, while Alderfer made it a special day for her first appearance upping her school and Landmark Conference record in the Pentathlon with 3,503 points as both earned Second Team All-American.

Alderfer began her day in the morning with the 60-meter hurdles, earning a time of 9.21 and 867 points off the bat. Heading into the high jump, she made a bid for her own school and conference record after doubling down for a new PR in the event. With her previous best being 1.50m, she cleared the 1.51m bar on her first try, then scorched the 1.54m level on her second attempt. The PRs continued to pour in, as her next stop was in the shot put, throwing 9.90m on her opening throw to top her previous best of 9.85m. She moved into more familiar territory with one of her strong suits in the long jump, going 5.59m on her first leap for the fourth-best mark in the event. Things finally met its end Friday evening in the 800 meters. Running the second heat, Alderfer established another lifetime best at 2:27.80. Her final tally placed her tenth overall, with Emory's Nikki Boon winning the pentathlon with 4,061 points. Only 44 points separated Alderfer from a podium placement, though she superceded her previous school and Landmark record by 79 points from just seven days ago at the AARTFC Championships.

Yoder looked to achieve another All-American finish in the 60 hurdles after reaching fourth place at last year's indoor title chase in Virginia Beach with a PR of 8.53. In Friday's preliminaries she finished with a time of 8.73, good, good for 11th overall and just .02 seconds off the qualifying time. It earned her the fourth-fastest time in her heat, as her personal-best time of 8.71 from earlier this season pitted her in heat two, the fastest of the three, with the likes of UMass-Boston's Aryianna Garceau, who logged the fastest prelim time in the lane next to Yoder's at 8.49. Pacific's Allyson Hammond ran the second-fastest prelim time as a member of that heat also at 8.50.

The seniors' performances gives the River Hawks another pair of Indoor All-Americans after Yoder and triple jumper Remi Acord assumed those honors last year. Alderfer, Yoder, and the rest of the Susquehanna squad have a brief pause before opening its outdoor track and field season at home for the Jim Taylor Duals, running Saturday, Mar. 29, with the throws reserved for Friday, Mar. 28 at Doug Arthur Stadium.
