WILLIAMSTOWN, MASS. - Susquehanna women's track and field had a great challenge ahead of them this week when they traveled to the All-Atlantic Region Track & Field Conference (AARTFC) Championships at Williams College. Heading into the home stretch of the spring, some of the River Hawks gaining momentum were
Hannah Alderfer and
Sarah Bower, both taking ownership of school records in the heptathlon and pole vault, respectively. Another person in the mix was
Ainslee Binkley, who won the Landmark Conference title in the javelin. All three did their part to score for the women Wednesday and Thursday.
Alderfer, who holds the team record in the hep with 4,619 points, kicked off the two-day meet posting the fastest time in the 100 hurdles at 15.28, along with the second-best marks in the shot put at 9.76m and the 200 meters at 26.15. She added a height of 1.41m in the high jump before calling it a day for day one. She was right back at it Thursday morning with the top distance in the long jump at 5.70m, along with the fourth-best throw in the javelin at 30.68m and eighth in the 800 at 2:32.50. At meet's end she took the bronze with 4,536 points, just 185 points off the top mark set by Scranton's Molly White. Alderfer also competed in the individual long jump, going 5.37m.Â
The senior Bower, who holds both the indoor and outdoor school pole vault records, made one final swipe at the outdoor record, besting her previous standard of 3.35m by clearing 3.44m on her third try. She entered at 3.14m, needing only her first tries to clear the opening height and the 3.29m. bar before going for the big one at 3.44m to wrap a historical career. The junior Binkley followed up her conference championship campaign with a 36.92m throw in the javelin on her third go, good enough for sixth place.Â
Ashley Newman ran the 100-meter prelims on Wednesday, running 12.95.
Victoria Urbaez took to the 800 meters, finishing tenth at 2:18.18, while senior
Liza Levin ran a 2:20.81 for 21st overall. The foursome of Levin,
Katie Wojton,
Gabby Howe, and Urbaez ran the 4x800, posting a time of 9:45.42.Â
