SELINSGROVE, PA - Susquehanna women's soccer began its 2025 Landmark Conference season on Saturday against reigning champions Scranton, but fell 1-0 to the Royals behind a goal at the end of the first half.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Early chances came the Royals' way, but Katie Henchy made a couple important early saves to keep the visitors off the board, denying a shot from a tight angle and another from long range.
- Morgan Stickley came close for Susquehanna in the 19th minute after Ava Billmeyer played her in, and her shot beat the goalkeeper, but landed on the roof of the net.
- In the 28th minute, a similar chance came for Kalie Quaglia on a similar pass from Billmeyer, and it had the same result, on the wrong side of the crossbar after beating the outstretched arms of Scranton goalkeeper Mackenzie Van Arsdale.
- Just four minutes before the interval, a cross from the left flank picked out the head of Scranton forward Peyton DiLello, whose header narrowly evaded Henchy for the opening goal.
- While the River Hawks sought an equalizer, Henchy was called into action four further times, keeping every Scranton effort at bay in the second half.
- An 86th-minute corner delivered by Stickley was dangerously delivered just in front of the goal, and it found its way onto the far post before bouncing dangerously across the goal-line, but the nearest player was a Scranton defender to hack the ball off the line.
- A late free-kick by Chloe Michaels represented a last-gasp chance at an equalizer, but it was cleared away with the last touch of the game.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Susquehanna took three shots, finding the target with one, which was Billmeyer's touch from Stickley's corner that was cleared off the line. Scranton took 14, seven of which were on target, as Henchy made six saves.
- Scranton won two corners to the River Hawks' one, all of which came in the second half.
- Scranton committed six fouls while Susquehanna committed four, and neither side were shown any yellow or red cards.
UP NEXT FOR SU
- A two-game road trip featuring trips to Dickinson and Elizabethtown are upcoming, while the next home game takes place on Tuesday, October 7th, when Wilkes visit Sassafras Field for a 7 PM kickoff. Susquehanna are now 5-5 on the season.
