MADISON, NJ - Mikey Cumbo and
Jackson Van Wagener combined for 37 points on the road on Saturday afternoon against Drew University. The River Hawks fell short, 97-88, after a late surge from the Rangers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Drew took an early 9-2 lead in the game's first two minutes before the River Hawks surged back on a 5-0 run of their own. Redshirt Freshman Mikey Cumbo made a three-pointer at the 16:22 mark in the first half, cutting the lead to just two.
- Less than three minutes later, Cumbo made a second three pointer to tie the game at 11. The Dallas, PA native finished the game with a team-high 19 points.
- Both teams traded points over the next several minutes before a three pointer from Drew's Andre De Los Reyes gave the Rangers a 21-16 lead with 8:55 remaining.
- Six points scored by both Jackson Van Wagener and Luke Fryer in the final five minutes of the first half propelled Susquehanna to go on a 17-14 run before the break.
- The two teams each went back and forth, coming out of the break. The Rangers outscored Susquehanna 14-12 in the first six minutes of the half, claiming a 61-54 lead before Susquehanna called a timeout with 14:07 remaining.
- Cumbo made a double-clutch layup at the with 7:00 remaining, one that sparked a 5-2 run, cutting Drew's lead to just four points just over five minutes left in the game.
- The Rangers held control of the game's final five minutes, holding their lead.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Susquehanna outshot Drew from the field, 45.9%-45%, but the difference came from the free throw line and beyond the arc. Drew shot 40.6% from three to Susquehanna's 33.3% and 83.3% from the line to Susquehanna's 72.2%.
- The River Hawks outrebounded their opponent for the second straight game, 38-36—and scored more points off of Drew's turnovers (13-8).
- Cumbo, who finished the game with 19 points, made three three-pointers to go along with five rebounds and four assists.
- Van Wagener led the team with six assists and 18 points on 5-11 shooting from the field.
- Brandon Lavitt led Susquehanna in rebounds with eight.
- Both Lavitt and Billy Anderson led the team with two steals a piece.
UP NEXT FOR THE RIVER HAWKS
- The River Hawks head back to Selinsgrove for a two-game home stretch. They are set to host Goucher at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, January 21 before a weekend battle against Elizabethtown College next Saturday.
- Susquehanna's record falls to 8-7 overall and 4-4 in the Landmark Conference as they look to snap a three-game skid.
