Holder of SU's career and season rushing records for 24 years, Bastress earned four letters in football as a halfback and quarterback and three in baseball as a center fielder. On the gridiron, Bastress amassed 1,517 rushing yards in 30 games. Captain of the 1938 team, he gained Honorable Mention Little All-America and earned Second Team All-State honors.
