Inducted as the consummate "renaissance" athlete of his period, Gay lettered four years in both football and golf, earning All-MAC honors in both. He also lettered in wrestling and track. A 6-2, 235 lb. defensive end in football, he bolstered the defense on the 1970 MAC North championship team. He was 3rd on the team with 51 tackles (37 solo). As a freshman, he played golf and threw the shot and discus in track and field, impacting the MAC results in both sports. He captioned the 1971 golf team which finished 2nd of 22 teams in the 1971 MAC Championships. Asked to wrestle as a senior, Gay started at heavyweight for coach Charley Kunes.
