Captain of the football, basketball, and baseball teams his senior year. Sweeney was named to the 1922 All-Eastern team as a halfback. His career was highlighted by a 103-TD kickoff return in a 1922 loss to Colgate which was listed in the NCAA record books for many years. He played at the professional level in all three sports in 1923.
