Hazel was the 1977 recipient of the Blair Heaton award for Most Outstanding Male Scholar/Athlete. A four-year letter winner in soccer, he led the team in scoring with five goals and two assists during his senior season. His 19 career goals broke the 11-year-old school record and are still among the all-time leaders. Hazel earned three letters in baseball starting at third base for two seasons and was named a MAC Northern Division Second Team All-Star in 1977.
