Edgar Wingard, a Selinsgrove native, was a football player and coach at Susquehanna University. He played line positions for the Crusaders in 1899 and 1900 and was the captain of the 1901 team. Wingard coached football and basketball at Susquehanna from 1916-17 and again as head football coach in 1919 and 1924-25. He also served as head football coach at Ohio Northern, Butler, Western University of Pennsylvania (now known as Pittsburgh), Louisiana State, Maine, and Bucknell. In 1908 Wingard led his LSU team to a 10-0 record, earning them the distinction of that year's national championship by the National Championship Foundation. He earned another undefeated season as head coach at Bucknell in 1918 with a 6-0 record. He owns a 74-38-6 all-time record as a head football coach before passing away in Selinsgrove in 1927. He was also an assistant coach under the legendary Glenn Scobey "Pop" Warner.
