As a Crusader half-back in 1959 John received Little-All-America Honors in leading his squad to the first winning season since 1952. As a senior, John scored 59 point- still the 11th best season total through 1989 and garnered 118 points for his career, 10th best career total. he led his team school record of 196 points for the season.
